Turning point(s): Germany and Europe in global competition

The renewed Russian offensive against Ukraine has destroyed the cornerstones of the European security order that has prevailed to date: The cooperative and integrative approach taken with regards to Russia to date has failed. Europe must now position itself for a confrontational order in which security must no longer be ensured with Russia, but rather against it. Similar trends are emerging internationally, for example with the increasingly aggressive behavior of China in the Indo-Pacific or the increase in nuclear threats. These global developments require a repositioning of Western partners, especially Europe and Germany. The turning point has been explained, but where do we stand today? What can and needs to be done? How can peace be restored in Europe?

Emmy Noether (1882-1935) was a mathematician and founder of modern axiomatic algebra, and also one of the first women to study in Erlangen. The lecture series commemorates the day the female scientist completed her postdoctoral habilitation and finally succeeded in being recognized as a Privatdozentin, obtaining her hard-fought authorization to lecture at a university on June 5, 1919. Our annual Emmy Noether Lecture aims to raise the visibility of the scientific expertise of women in all subject areas.
