Were you the first in your family to start studying? Did you know that, as so-called first-time academics, you go through a career path that is unfortunately still not a given? Have you ever experienced exclusion or rejection due to your social background during your career and felt like you didn’t belong as a result? You are far from alone in this, as many so-called first-time academics know these experiences and questions precisely!

As part of its diversity strategy, FAU has recognized the issue of educational equity as a central strategic field of action and would like to promote the networking of those affected and help break down structural barriers through an open culture of discussion and targeted offers.

As FAU’s Diversity Management – in cooperation with the Faculty of Humanities, the School of Business, Economics and Society, and the organization Arbeiterkind.de -, we would therefore like to invite you to a networking event for first-time students and doctoral candidates! Not only will you learn interesting facts about various aspects of the topic of educational inequality, but you will also have the opportunity to meet like-minded people and talk to lecturers who were also the first in their families to study and will talk about their careers.

When: Friday, April 26th, 2-5 pm

Where: Erlangen Main Library, room 0.021 ground floor, Schuhstraße 1a, 91052 Erlangen

Program:

  • Greetings from the Vice President Education, Prof. Dr. Andrea Bréard, and the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Dr. Kay Kirchman
  • Short lecture “Educational injustice in the university system: first-generation students” by Dr. Martina Kübler (state coordinator Arbeiterkind.de for Bavaria)
  • Three short poster presentations on research projects in the area of educational equity
  • Networking: Get to know other first-time students from students to professors and exchange your experiences over delicious coffee and cake!

Event language: German and English (free discussions are welcome in any language)
